Cheap Business Class Tickets Getting Harder to Earn
Earning your cheap business class tickets is getting more challenging.
Last year, United and Delta both changed the way their frequent flyer mile programs work. Instead of basing awards on miles traveled, they added a minimum annual spending level. Fliers must now spend at least $2,500 on tickets in order to earn the lowest elite status, additionally they must fly 30 segments or twenty-five thousand miles.
To move up to the next status level, fliers must spend $5,000 annually, and travel fifty-thousand miles, or sixty segments.
Several months ago, United increased redemption miles to balance the cost of providing flyer miles, particularly in the expensive premium cabins and partner carriers.
However, American Airlines, who merged with US Airways last year, has not changed their program. While it makes sense for the airlines to reward their highest paying customers, American Airlines first has to merge the two plans before they can make changes.
This means you still have time to earn some cheap business class miles with American Airlines before big changes.
